Overview

Prismatica, by RAW Design in collaboration with ATOMIC3, was a temporary installation in 2019 comprised of 25 pivoting prisms that stood over two meters tall and transformed Public Square into a giant kaleidoscope.

About the Art

Prismatica is an outdoor interactive installation designed by RAW Design, a Toronto-based architectural firm that works on various scales and project types, from community greenhouses to large residential developments. The installation features prisms made of panels laminated with a dichroic film that transmits and reflects every color in the visible spectrum, varying with the position of the light source and the observer. The prisms are mounted on bases containing projectors, creating an infinite interplay of lights and colorful reflections as visitors wander among and manipulate them. As the prisms rotate, a variable-intensity soundtrack comprising of bell sounds plays in the background.

To create Prismatica, RAW Design assembled a team of professionals from several fields, including applied science, technology, art, and architecture. The team takes a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to their work. The project's production partners were Quartier des Spectacles Montréal and Creos.
