Market Avenue Soon to Be Closed to Cars, Making Way For Pop-Up Art Installation

Beginning July 1, you’ll no longer be able to drive your vehicles down Market Avenue in Ohio City. The popular destination, home to Cleveland stalwarts like Flying Fig and Great Lakes Brewing Company, is closing to traffic for a pop-up art installation set to last all summer.

“Creating a pedestrian and bike friendly Market Avenue by cutting off vehicular traffic is a step towards a more human friendly neighborhood for everyone,” Councilman Kerry McCormack said in a statement. “These types of relatively inexpensive and simple changes can convert more of our public spaces into thriving community gathering places while supporting local businesses and creativity.”

The temporary new park will be an extension of Market Square Park, where plenty of summer events and markets already take place. Over the next weeks, expect to see new art installations and comfy outdoor furniture dotting the soon-to-be-closed-off road.

The free pop-up is collaboration between the community development company Ohio City Incorporated, McCormack, the City of Cleveland, LAND Studio and other nearby businesses. If this trial run goes well, and public feedback is generally positive, planners are looking to close the road off permanently by next year.
