Cleveland's Public Square is one of the country's great places
Public Square is one of the great places in America.
So says the American Planning Association, which on Tuesday, Sept. 25, announced 15 locations that have been added to its flagship program, Great Places in America.
The association says the Great Places in America program "recognizes unique and exemplary streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces — three essential components of all communities." The places "have been shaped by forward thinking planning that showcases affordable transportation options, promotes community involvement and accessibility, and fosters economic opportunity." The 290 Great Places designated to date are located in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Public Square was among five places added in the "Great Public Spaces" category. Others recognized in that category were The Plaza in Orange, Calif.; Aspen Pedestrian Mall in Aspen, Colo.; Mill River Park in Stamford, Conn.; and RiversEdge at Marcum Park in Hamilton, Ohio.
The 10 other honorees for 2018 are here.
The association's profile of Public Square says the space's renovation in 2016 "emphasize(s) people rather than cars, while still allowing the square to serve as the region's main transit transfer point. The square was designed to inspire the community, promote physical, mental, and economic health, and integrate green infrastructure."
