Rock Hall, Destination Cleveland and LAND studio combine for Rock Box Project

It is a simple fact. Cleveland IS the Rock and Roll Capital of the world. It is where the term Rock and Roll was coined by Alan Freed. It is the twenty year home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. We have rock bands that anywhere else would be headlining. We have more opportunities to listen to rock and roll music via taverns, shows and festivals than anywhere in the world. The fact of the matter is Clevelanders love their Rock and Roll!

This summer marks the third time in 160 years that the Republican National convention will be held in Cleveland. The event will be held at the Q (Quicken Loans Arena) and the city has plans to capitalize on our Rock and Roll heritage.

The project is called ROCK BOX and is sponsored by The Rock Hall, Destination Cleveland and LAND studio and has been given the blessing by the City of Cleveland Planning Commission.

ROCK BOX will consist of a number of permanent outdoor installations of clusters of custom speakers that will be placed throughout Downtown Cleveland (primarily along E. 9th St. aka Rock and Roll Boulevard). During the day, these installations will provide a visual and auditory experience as they broadcast music that was created by inductees of the Rock Hall.
This is in conjunction with the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame’s Walk of Fame that was first initiated in 2012 as a way of honoring Rock and Roll Inductees by installing a plaque in the sidewalk following a route that begins at public hall and will travel on E. 9th St. As the Walk of Fame and ROCK BOX installations are completed, eventually each and every Inductee will be honored by their plaque and musical riffs inspired by inductees that will be played multiple times a day.

“This is an incredible opportunity to engage with visitors and residents and expand Cleveland’s Rock and Roll attitude into Downtown,” said Greg Harris, president and CEO, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“The ROCK BOX project is a creative and vibrant piece of visual art that will leave no reservation that Cleveland is the center of the rock universe.” “The design committee’s search for an artist included nationally and internationally renowned artists and designers, and we were delighted to have found the approach and caliber we were seeking in a Cleveland native,” said David Gilbert, president and CEO, Destination Cleveland. “Rock and roll plays a significant role in our city’s history; it is the foundation of one of our many world-class attributes. We’re excited that it will be showcased even more prominently to both our residents and those who visit Cleveland.”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. On Wednesdays (and Saturdays through Labor Day), the Museum is open until 9 p.m. For general inquiries, please call (216) 781-ROCK (7625) or click HERE.
