Some inside-the-box thinking bolsters Edgewater Park

Edgewater Park is looking a lot different — and better — under Cleveland Metroparks’ management. The latest improvement: the installation of the final Bike Box in Cuyahoga County.

The Bike Box, an 8’-by-20’ repurposed, locally-sourced shipping container, provides safe, sheltered bike parking near Edgewater Beach for 20 to 25 bikes.

Metroparks CEO Brian Zimmerman says the Bike Box “showcases the personality of the Cleveland Metro parks while promoting and increasing healthy transportation alternatives for the community."

The Edgewater Park Bike Box is the last of seven Bike Boxes sponsored by the Charter One Foundation in Cuyahoga County.

The bike box project dates to August 2012, when the Charter One Foundation provided a grant to LAND studio through the bank's Growing Communities initiative, which aims to revitalize low- to moderate-income neighborhoods with innovative projects.

After selecting Edgewater Beach as the last location, LAND studio worked with Cleveland Metroparks and local artisans at Rustbelt Welding Co.

"As we see a growth in the number of people biking for recreation and transportation, it is exciting to see innovative bike parking options being incorporated into the renaissance happening at Edgewater Park," said Jacob VanSickle, executive director of Bike Cleveland, in a statement.
