Edgewater Park gets a public art Bike Box to accommodate visitors on two wheels: Michael K. McIntyre's Tipoff

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- This summer -- don't worry frozen Northeast Ohioans, it will come eventually -- Edgewater patrons are encouraged to bike to the beach.
Edgewater Park in Cleveland has been chosen as the location for a new public art "Bike Box" station. You might have seen Bike Box installations around town. They're re-purposed shipping containers -- the kind you see on trains and freighters -- modified to provide sheltered parking for up to 30 bicycles. A full-size one is 20 feet by eight feet.
The Edgewater Bike Box will be installed this spring. Until the Cleveland Metroparks took over the lakefront properties from the state last year, a large shipping container at Edgewater likely would have been filled with used diapers and empty bottles within days. The Metroparks already have shown a penchant for cleanliness, though, taking control of one of Edgewater's biggest banes -- garbage.
The first Bike Box, the brainchild of public art nonprofit LAND studio's Greg Peckham,  was installed in Ohio City next to Nano Brew. In 2012, LAND studio and the bicycling advocacy group Bike Cleveland, with funding from the Charter One Foundation, worked with local artisans at The Rustbelt Welding Company to create that first Bike Box. Since then, the Tremont, Ohio City, Detroit-Shoreway and St. Clair-Superior neighborhoods have welcomed the bike parking corrals.
In August, LAND studio announced a competition for the final Bike Box. Edgewater was deemed the best of 10 applicants, with judging based on visibility and current and future bike parking needs for the proposed location.
“We are thrilled to be chosen as the recipient for the final Bike Box,” said Brian Zimmerman, Cleveland Metroparks CEO. “We hope to see even more visitors to the park in 2014 and having resources for alternative transportation is a great way to increase exposure."
