Downtown Westin will have 'signature public artwork'

The Westin Cleveland Downtown hotel, currently undergoing renovations for a spring 2014 opening, has presented to the city of Cleveland's Landmarks Commission plans for what hotel managerSage Hospitality calls a “signature public artwork” by local artist Sarah Kabot.

Sage said the large-scale work will welcome guests as they enter the hotel and will serve as the “main showpiece” of a local art program created in conjunction with LAND studio, a Cleveland-based nonprofit that specializes in public space design and connecting artists into urban redevelopment efforts. (LAND stands for “landscape, art, neighborhoods, development.)

For the Westin Cleveland Downtown, “artwork was targeted that draws on the region's rich industrial heritage and Cleveland's distinctive natural landscape to create the exciting feel of reinvention,” according to a news release from Sage and LAND studio.

“Many of the traditional industries that built Cleveland are largely gone,” said Gregory Peckham, managing director of LAND studio, in a statement. “What remains, however, is a deep local culture that puts a high value on craftsmanship and hard work, invention and re-invention, and building a legacy for future generations. That's what we've conveyed in the Westin's art collection.”

Sage and LAND studio said in the news release that each of the hotel's 484 rooms, its lobby and public spaces will showcase Cleveland artists including Liz Maugans, Michael Loderstedt, Dana Oldfather, Jen Craun and Anne Kibbe.
