57 organizations qualify for operating support grants from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Fifty-seven of the 61 Cuyahoga County arts and cultural organizations that applied for 2013-14 general operating support from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture qualified to receive funding.

To qualify, organizations had to receive scores of 75 or higher, out of 100, during panel reviews last week at the Idea Center in PlayhouseSquare.

Final scores for organizations that made the cut could rise by up to 15 points, based on a group's financial health, by the time the CAC board approves the results Monday, Nov. 19, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland and announces the grant amounts, which are expected to total nearly $14 million.

A total of 189 organizations applied for the 2013-14 CAC grants for general operating support and for projects.

During last week's panel reviews for general operating support, the Cleveland International Film Festival received the highest score of 94.85, followed by Zygote Press (94), the Cleveland Museum of Art (93.42), Ideastream (92.71), the PlayhouseSquare Foundation (91.71), Cleveland Public Theatre (91.14), the Rainey Institute (90.71) and LAND Studio (90).

Among other organizations that received strong scores were Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio (89.71), Professional Flair (89.42), the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture (88.57), MOCA Cleveland (88.42), the Cleveland Institute of Music (88) and the Cleveland Play House (88).

Organizations that didn't qualify were the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve, the International Women's Air and Space Museum, the Lakewood Historical Society and the Musical Theater Project.

Scores were determined using CAC funding criteria: public benefit (up to 45 points); artistic and cultural vibrancy (35 points); and organizational capacity (20 points).

Review panels will continue at the Idea Center on Monday through Thursday, when panelists will score one-year project-support applications from 64 organizations seeking up to $50,000 each and 64 groups asking for grants up to $5,000 apiece.

CAC was the created in 2005 to award money raised through Issue 18, the so-called cigarette tax. The agency began disbursing funds in 2008 and thus far has awarded a total of $80 million to 182 organizations.

CAC's first allocation in 2008 was $16 million. It was $15 million last year.
