St. Clair Superior Revitalization

Gordon Park South

Gordon Park South, a vital lakefront greenspace in St. Clair-Superior, is undergoing a once-in-a-generation transformation thanks to nearly $29 million in investment from the Mandel Foundation. LAND studio partnered with SmithGroup, Cleveland Metroparks, and local engagement specialists to guide a design process centered on resident input. 

The resulting consensus plan balances nature, play, and cultural connection. It creates new opportunities for trails, recreation, and family gathering spaces, while also strengthening the link between the neighborhood and Lake Erie’s shoreline. 

A centerpiece of this transformation is a monumental 1,400-foot mural by artist Louise Chen Jones. Drawing inspiration from the birds, butterflies, and native flora of Lake Erie, her immersive artwork wraps the edges of the park in vibrant color. Beyond its visual impact, the mural invites residents to celebrate the natural ecology of their neighborhood, turning Gordon Park into both an environmental and cultural landmark.

Community Banners

As part of broader placemaking efforts, LAND studio collaborated with residents, partners, and a local photographer, McKinley Wiley, to design and install community banners on St. Clair Ave. Many of the banners feature portraits of neighborhood residents and business owners, captured on-site in the places they live and work. Others carry the message “One Community, Many Cultures”—translated into 16 different languages spoken in the neighborhood, celebrating the area's rich cultural diversity. Together, the banners highlight local pride, identity, and connection, contributing to a more welcoming and vibrant streetscape that complements ongoing revitalization efforts.

E. 72nd Flower Mural

Louise Chen Jones has brought some of the most ambitious public artworks in Ohio to life. Her botanical mural along E. 72nd Street is the largest of its kind in the state—a sweeping, joy-filled composition of plants, flowers, and color that radiates with hope and vibrancy. Her mural not only beautifies the urban landscape but also reinforces a deeper connection between residents and the lakefront.

Dayz Whun Murals

One of Cleveland’s most celebrated street artists, Dayz Whun infuses bold movement and saturated color into every wall he touches. His contributions in St. Clair-Superior include:

• Koi mural at 4115 St. Clair Avenue, where swimming koi bring energy and vibrancy to a busy commercial corridor. 
• Birds in Bloom at 6516 St Clair Avenue, a tribute to Northeast Ohio’s native bird species and the quiet beauty found in everyday backyards.

Dayz’s murals are rooted in joy and connection, turning blank facades into living canvases that celebrate both nature and neighborhood pride.

"Good Things Are Happening" Mural

At 4515 St. Clair Avenue, Cleveland-based muralist and designer Lisa Quine transformed the iconic DayGlo building with a mural inspired by natural landscapes. Using vivid neon hues that echo the building’s history, Quine’s design turns the structure into a glowing landmark. Her work demonstrates how contemporary public art can reimagine familiar spaces, bringing fresh energy to one of the corridor’s most visible sites.

"From St. Clair with Love" Mural

Local artist Aaron D. Williams, known professionally as Aawful Aaron, painted From St. Clair with Love at 6517 St. Clair Avenue. A deep believer in the power of community, Williams drew on his familiarity with the neighborhood to infuse themes of unity, resilience, and collaboration into the mural. The piece reflects both personal connection and collective progress, showing how art can build bridges and inspire pride.

"Emergence" Mural

Internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Kasumi brought a distinctive perspective to St. Clair-Superior with Emergence at 6225 St. Clair Avenue. The patterned mural draws on folk traditions, weaving together the diverse cultural histories of the neighborhood’s residents. By honoring overlooked stories and presenting them in a bold, contemporary form, Emergence creates a powerful dialogue between past and present, memory and future.
