Overview

In the summer of 2024, LAND studio collaborated with Derek Brennan to bring a public artwork to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cleveland Reservation. The mural commemorates the dedication and expertise of the US Army Corps of Engineers. Let Us Try can be seen at the end of E. 9th St in North Coast Harbor near the Rock Hall.

From the Artist

This mural is a tribute to the dedication, skill, and spirit of service exemplified by the US Army Corps of Engineers, honoring their contributions to the nation and the work done locally. In the center of the mural, the motto of the Corps, “Essayons” (French for “Let Us Try”), is prominently displayed below a statue of Moses Cleaveland. Moses was a prominent surveyor and leader of the Connecticut Land Company, responsible for surveying and founding the city of Cleveland. Additionally, the emblems and symbols associated with the Corps, such as the castle, are incorporated into the design to reinforce the Corps’ identity and heritage. Throughout the mural, engineers are shown working together on complex engineering projects, such as building bridges or dredging the local lakes and rivers. Other important works, such as environmental restoration and dam and lock development, are featured as well. The attention to detail, precision, and teamwork exemplify the core values of the Corps.
