University East Plaza
About the Work
Located at the intersection of Euclid, Mayfield and Ford, this discreet plaza has become a gem in the heart of University Circle. Adjacent to billions in institutional investment, including the new Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland Institute of Art and the Uptown development. With San Francisco firm CMG leading the design, the park demonstrates creative planning and stunning design.
The redesigned University East Plaza improved an underused existing sidewalk plaza at Case Western University. The plaza is now a gateway to the University Circle District, and an active social space for students, campus visitors, and patrons of the adjacent restaurants. The new scheme raises the plaza above the surrounding sidewalks to create an informal stage and extensive seating edges, framed by a linear light feature that meanders through the existing tree canopy.
LAND studio worked with University Circle, Inc. to engage stakeholders, select a national landscape architecture team, manage the design, and oversee construction.
