About the Work

As part of the public art program for Slavic Village’s Morgana Run Trail, Cleveland’s first multi-purpose rails-to-trails project, LAND studio worked with Slavic Village Development to develop a marker for the trail's East 49th Street trailhead.

The 35-foot-tall flower sculpture composed of steel, bicycle wheels, and LED lighting, beautifies and brings attention to this trailhead. The sculpture was designed by artist Jake Beckman and fabricated by Signature Sign Company of Cleveland.

How It Started

In 2007, Slavic Village Development, in partnership with LAND studio, commissioned local artists Christopher Diehl and Shaun Breslin to develop a public-art master plan for the Morgana Run Trail. The plan set out a range of possible projects and project approaches that could be carried out over several years and identified opportunities for artists to continue influencing life along the trail.

For the trailhead, Slavic Village Development was looking for a marker that would be an inspiring piece of artwork while also serving to identify the entrance to the trail. The trailhead is in view of Interstate 77, which runs immediately parallel to 49th Street, providing yet another purpose for the artwork—it will call the attention of tens of thousands of daily passersby to the trail and Slavic Village.

When will it be lit? I am a close by neighbor, and have yet to see it illuminated several years after installation.

Thank you for inquiring. Rotaflora is experiencing some electrical challenges that are currently being addressed by Slavic Village CDC. We hope to see the light back on soon too!
