How It Started

As part of the Cleveland Museum of Art's Summer Solstice celebration, LAND studio was commissioned to create one-night, temporary installations in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The goal of the projects was to create a sense of excitement leading up to the event and provide impact and visibility during the party.

The Outcome

In 2011, the 1916 façade of the Cleveland Museum of Art was transformed by large-scale video projections created by artist Kasumi. Kasumi, a 2011 Guggenheim Fellow and professor at the Cleveland Institute of Art, created “Happy Birthday Summer,” a 42 minute long video characterized by bright colors, sweeping movement, and a dramatic dream-like feeling. The video looped continuously after dark at the event, shining light onto the late hours of the Solstice celebration.

Kasumi’s involvement in this project was a result of a partnership between the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Institute of Art, and LAND studio.
